Our Divorce Practice
We represent clients throughout the District of Columbia at all stages of a divorce, from the initial filing, through post-judgment motions for modification or enforcement of existing divorce orders. Though we encourage clients to find cooperative means, such as negotiated settlements or mediation, to resolve family law matters, we will take your case to trial if necessary to protect your interests. We favor mediation and negotiation, however, as they tend to be more cost-effective, allow you greater control of the process, and ultimately lead to resolutions that are more reliable and are easier to enforce.
We handle all matters related to contested or uncontested divorce proceedings, including:
- Child custody and visitation - We will help you develop and establish custody and visitation plans that are in the best interests of your children while protecting your rights as a parent.
- Child support or spousal support - We will review all child support orders for compliance with DC guidelines and to ensure that all relevant income is taken into account. We will also help you determine if alimony is appropriate and, if so, how much should be paid for how long.
- Division of marital property - We will work with you to equitably divide the debts and assets of your marriage, including real estate, bank accounts and investments, retirement plans and business assets.
We will also help you prepare and implement a separation agreement. If you and your spouse are willing and able to work out a fair distribution of assets and agree to custody, visitation and support arrangements, we will negotiate, review and prepare the agreement for you.
